Expectations

Local school districts, schools and classrooms are integral partners in the preparation of Midway College teacher candidates, and local teachers who supervise candidates are considered a vital part of the Midway faculty. This includes both

Experiences Prior to Student Teaching

Beginning in their first semester, candidates are expected to observe and work hands-on with children in classrooms as part of their professional preparation.

  • Midway College works with local school partners to assign each candidate to a school/teacher/classroom each semester so that the candidate will have observation and clinical/hands-on experiences with a variety of ages covered in their certificate and in a variety of settings, content areas and diverse needs.
  • Local teachers who supervise candidates in field experiences prior to student teaching must
    • hold a teaching certificate in the appropriate area, and
    • already have completed their internship year.

For further information, you may refer to the Teacher Education Student Handbook Part 3: Student Teaching.

Field Experience

The field experience is also a critical part of the Midway College curriculum. Midway candidates must complete at least 150 hours of field experience before they may student teach. At least 75 of those hours are in “clinical experiences” where the candidate is actively engaged in the teaching process, such as

  • directing a small group in a learning activity,
  • tutoring or providing 1-1 assistance to a student, or
  • teaching a lesson to a class.

Other activities in the classroom include observing instruction, reviewing classroom instructional materials, or completing other activities related to the instructional program.

Midway candidates are usually assigned to a classroom for a semester. Depending on their previous experiences and level in the teacher education program, some candidates may spend more time observing, while others are more likely to spend all the time engaged directly with students in some way. The candidate will let you know if there are specific expectations for a particular Midway class in which they are enrolled.

There are three forms that we ask the supervising teacher to complete for the student during field placement:

  • Sign the student’s Daily Log at the end of each visit to document their time in the classroom;
  • Sign the student’s End-of-Semester Documentation of Hours for the total time spent in your classroom; and
  • Complete a short online Field Student Assessment on the student at the end of the placement.
  • In addition, we would like your input into our program. Click here for the appropriate forms.
