Summary for Local Principals and Teachers

Teacher Education is the largest of the four pillar programs at Midway College and has a current enrollment of over 300 majors. According to the Education Professional Standards Board’s Kentucky Educator Preparation Program Report Card, the Midway Teacher Education Program has an overall Quality Program Index of Excellent Performance, a 3.83 out of 4 points calculated on candidate testing results and performance during the first year of employment.

The program is delivered through both a traditional day program offered on the Midway campus and an evening-weekend program for non-traditional students offered at various sites across Kentucky in partnership with the community colleges.

With a conceptual framework based on a constructivist, multicultural approach and centered on the theme Teachers: Professional Leaders Making a Difference, Midway prepares graduates as teacher leaders who can meet the nine Kentucky New Teacher Standards required of all Kentucky teachers as well as a Midway standard:

Midway College Teacher Standard 10 : The teacher demonstrates leadership dispositions through a deepening knowledge of self and the ability to think critically, solve problems and act decisively; and a commitment to cultural values, attitudes and diversity.

MCTS 10.1 The teacher leader initiates and supports positive educational change.

MCTS 10.2 The teacher leader demonstrates skills of a reflective educational leader who perceives both self and others as empowered.

MCTS 10.3 The teacher leader commits to a deepening understanding of human diversity.

MCTS 10.4 The teacher leader seeks and continually refines teaching practices that communicate high expectations and generate enriched learning for all students.

MCTS 10.5 The teacher leader promotes student learning through knowledge construction rather than lecture and teacher-talk.
