Teachers: Professional Leader Making a Difference

Students may enroll at Midway College and Teacher Education coursework through either the Women’s College (day program on campus) or the School for Career Development (evening/weekend program at various community colleges).

Enrollment in the Women’s College

Enrollment in the School for Career Development

Once the student is admitted into Midway College with a declared interest in Teacher Education, an advisor will be assigned. The advisor will assist the student in selecting and registering for appropriate courses.

Students take introductory courses in Teacher Education as soon as they enter Midway. The introductory courses allow students to explore teaching as a profession and observe in elementary and secondary classrooms from the very beginning. All students interested in Teacher Education take a common core of courses in their first two years (Women’s College) or two semesters (School for Career Development).

As outlined in the Teacher Education Student Handbook, students must meet certain criteria to be formally admitted into the Teacher Education Program and register for upper level professional coursework. Criteria include such benchmarks as performance on a test of academic preparation (e.g., ACT score of 21), success in college coursework (minimum GPA of 2.5), grades of C or better in the introductory education courses, submission of a portfolio, and an interview with faculty and local practitioners.

Once admitted to the Teacher Education Program, students complete upper level courses specific to their planned certification area, complete at least 150 clock hours of experiences with children in classrooms, pass state required testing on professional content and methods, and meet other criteria for entering student teaching. All students complete a semester of student teaching prior to completing the program.

Enrollment in Women’s College

Students interested in enrolling in the Women’s College should submit a request for Admissions and Financial Aid Information.
