Elementary Education: The elementary program prepares candidates for Kentucky certification for Primary through Grade 5 (P-5). In Kentucky, primary education includes kindergarten through grade 3. The program is also approved to prepare Midway candidates located at the Southern Technical and Community College for West Virginia certification for elementary education.

The curriculum guide sheet for elementary (curriculum guidesheet for elementary) education majors specifies five types of coursework, totaling approximately 124 hours for graduation:

  • general education courses as part of the baccalaureate degree requirements
  • core professional courses that all teacher education majors complete
  • elementary methods courses
  • an academic area of emphasis in one of the academic disciplines taught in elementary school
  • electives.

P-5 candidates may complete a dual certification program with either middle school for P-5/5-9 certification or Learning and Behavior Disorders for P-5 Elementary/P-12 LBD certification.

Middle School Education: The middle school program prepares candidates for Kentucky certification for Grades 5 through 9.

The curriculum guide sheet for middle school education majors specifies five types of coursework, totaling approximately 125 hours for graduation:

  • general education courses as part of the baccalaureate degree requirements
  • core professional courses that all teacher education majors complete
  • middle school preparation
  • academic areas of emphasis in two teaching fields selected from English and communications, mathematics, science, social studies, or Learning and Behavior Disorders
  • electives.

Middle school candidates may complete a dual certification program with either elementary school for P-5/5-9 certification or Learning and Behavior Disorders for 5-9 Middle School/P-12 LBD certification.

Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD): Certification to teach students with mild to moderate disabilities (learning and behavior disorders) is a dual certificate program. Midway candidates complete either the elementary or the middle school program and the learning and behavior disorders program. The LBD program prepares candidates for Kentucky certification for Primary through Grade 12.

The curriculum guide sheet for LBD majors specifies five types of coursework, totaling approximately 130 hours for graduation:

  • general education courses as part of the baccalaureate degree requirements
  • core professional courses that all teacher education majors complete
  • the LBD coursework (30 hours, 21 non-duplicate with core professional courses)
  • and either:
