Teacher Education is the largest of the four
pillar programs at Midway College and has a current enrollment of over 200
students. The Midway College Teacher Education Program offers a Bachelor of Arts in Education and is approved to prepare candidates for teacher certification in the following areas:
Elementary (Primary-Grade 5),
Middle School (Grades 5-9),
Learning and Behavior Disorders (Primary-Grade 12),
Secondary Biology (Grades 8-12),
Secondary English (Grades 8-12), and
Secondary Math (Grades 8-12).
The Midway College program has a
Conceptual Framework based a constructivist, multicultural approach and centered on the theme,
Teachers: Professional Leaders Making a Difference. Midway prepares graduates as professional leaders who can demonstrate a mastery of the conceptual and pedagogical knowledge base for teaching; think critically, solve problems, and act decisively; demonstrate positive
dispositions as a teacher leader; and be receptive to varied cultural values, attitudes and diversity.
Midway candidates are prepared to meet criteria on the
state standards for new teachers set by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board, as well as a Midway standard specific to teacher leadership dispositions.
In its
continuous assessment system, Midway tracks each individual candidate’s progress on the above standards and provides additional assistance as needed:
- at major checkpoints
- formal application/entry into the teacher education program,
- entry to student teaching and
- program completion;
- in all teacher education courses; and
- in fieldwork settings.
The Midway Teacher Education Program is delivered through both a traditional day program offered on the Midway campus and an evening-weekend program for non-traditional students through the Midway School for Career Development. The evening/weekend program is offered at various sites across Kentucky. Midway is in the process of developing specific teacher education courses online during 2004-2005.
Teacher education is offered in a traditional 16-week semester format on the Midway campus to women enrolled in the
Women's College Day Program as residential or commuter students. Teacher education coursework typically begins in the freshman year and continues through senior year, including a semester of student teaching.
Teacher education is offered on evenings and weekends in an accelerated format to women and men enrolled in Midway’s
School for Career Development (SCD). Candidates enroll in a cohort that begins at the same and completes the teacher education classes together. Cohorts may start in Fall or Spring. SCD teacher education sites are located at community colleges from Louisville to southern and eastern Kentucky and West Virginia. Candidates have already taken or are concurrently taking the general education courses primarily through the community college; candidates enroll in Midway for the professional coursework. The teacher education coursework is taught over 5 semesters (2 ½ years) including student teaching. Teacher education courses are compacted and taught in 8-week sessions on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. Some offerings are available on mid-week evenings.
