All the resources and tools you need to find books and articles or to do research can be found on the library web site.  There you will find links to the library's catalog, full-text journal article databases, guides to research, MILTON the online research tutorial, APA and MLA style manuals, newspapers, general library information and much, much more.  The most used resources in Teacher Education are listed below.

When accessing our online databases for which we pay subscriptions, you will be asked to log on with your Midway College user ID and password.  These are the same ID and password as your Midway e-mail account.

Digital Education Network (DEN)

This website offers online tutorials and research tools for educators.  It offers a variety of software tutorials such as Front Page, but it is geared more towards teaching elementary and high school students how to use the software. 

 

ED.gov

ED.gov, the U. S. Department of Education's web site, promotes student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.

 

Education Policy and Analysis 

This is a peer reviewed journal published by Mary Lou Fulton College of Education, Arizona State and the University of South Florida.  In addition to English it is also available in Spanish and Portuguese.  It has access to full text articles dealing with education policy from 1993-2007 (v.1-15).

 

Education Professional Standards Board

The EPSB is responsible for issuing and renewing certificates for all Kentucky teachers and administrators.

 

Early Childhood Research Practices

This is a refereed, online, early childhood education journal. It covers topics related to the development, care and education of children from birth-8 years old.  It provides access to practice related research development and has full text articles from 1999-2007.

 

International Children's Digital Library Your Fairy Bookmother

 

This site was created as a resource for finding children's books.  You can search by subject or reader's age.   Title, author, illustrator and a brief description are given.  Book lists and reviews are also available.

 

Kentucky Department of Education 

The Kentucky Department of Education is a service agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The department provides resources and guidance to Kentucky's public schools and districts as they implement the state's K-12 education requirements. The department also serves as the state liaison for federal education requirements and funding opportunities.

 

KyEducators.org

KyEducators.org, the Education Professional Standards Board’s (EPSB’s) new Web site, addresses the needs of Kentucky educators by providing timely, efficient professional development through online courses designed to enhance professional growth.

 

KERA: Resources on the Kentucky Education Reform Act

Resources on the Kentucky Education Reform Act maintained by Western Kentucky University Libraries'  Web KERA Group.

 

National Center for Educational Statistics

NCES, located within the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences, is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education.

 

NIEER

The National Institute for Early Childhood Education Research supports early childhood education initiatives by providing objective, nonpartisan information based on research.

 

Teachers.Net

This site is a great site for lesson plans for student teachers and teachers already in the field.  It has 1000’s of lesson plans for every subject and grade level.  It has teacher classifieds where you can buy, sell and trade items related to teaching.  It also has message boards for teaching discussions and an area for job searching.  The site also contains articles from the teachers.net gazette which is a teacher support newsletter and it is free. 

 

Teachnet.com 

This is another website similar to teachers.net that offers teaching ideas, hints, tips, lesson plans, room ideas and an advice column for K-12 teachers.

 

TeacherTube

TeacherTube is an online community for sharing instructional videos. Videos designed for students can be posted to view

to learn a concept or skill.

 

Time For Kids

TIME For Kids is a weekly classroom news magazine that motivates kids to read.  Issues cover a wide range of real-world topics kids love to learn about - and it's the best nonfiction text you'll find.

 

Virtual LRC

The Virtual Learning Resources Center is actually a great general website that could cut across many different areas of study and not just education.  It is an information finding site, created by a librarian, for secondary school students and teachers; it gives easy access to pre-selected and evaluated information resources and it covers a wide variety of subjects.  It is both an index of over 10,000 web pages as well as a meta-search engine that includes information obtained from many of the best research portals and university and public library internet subject guides recommended by teachers and librarians.  It has information that can be used at both the school and university project level.

 

Wisconsin Center for Education Research

Provides a productive environment where the country’s leading scholars conduct basic and applied education research.  It has access to full text project publications, WCER working papers and WCER research highlights.

Council for Exceptional Children

The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) works to improve the educational success of individuals with disabilities and/or gifts and talents.

 

Intervention Central

Intervention Central offers free tools and resources to help school staff and parents to promote positive classroom behaviors and foster effective learning for all children and youth.

 

Kentucky Department of Education Gifted and Talented Web Site

Kentucky offers gifted education services for identified students across all grade levels. Primary students are screened and selected as high potential learners and students in grades 4-12 are formally identified for services including  aptitude, creative thinking, and leadership skills.

 

National Resource Center on AD/HD

The NRC is the nation's clearinghouse for science-based information about all aspects of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD).

 

TeachingLD

A Teaching How-to on math from Teaching Exceptional Children (TEC), a publication from the CEC.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation.

 

Wrightslaw

Wrightslaw is the leading website about special education law and advocacy, with thousands of articles, cases, and free resources about dozens of special education topics.

Teaching Practice

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards presents the exhibits Opening Classroom Doors. These exhibits of teaching practice feature National Board Certified Teachers from the Digital Edge project in minimally edited video from their classrooms. Each video segment and its accompanying text and commentary provide insight, a peek into the classrooms of these accomplished teachers.  Includes teaching methods for math, reading and many more subjects.
