The Inside Cover

Student Edition of Library Newsletter

 November 2007

Volume 1, Number 3

You see, I don't believe that libraries should be drab places where people sit in silence, and that's been the main reason for our policy of employing such wild animals as librarians.

Gathering @ the library

The library certainly has something to be thankful for this year. Our statistics show that students have been gathering at the library and harvesting resources in increasing numbers. Library use increased 14.5 percent in September, compared that month last year. More students make happier librarians. Way to go students!

To show our appreciation, we have created yet another informative edition of The Inside Cover. Enjoy!

*      How to search databases

*      Passwords for accessing databases

*      Hours

*      Paper topics

*      What to do when you don’t know what to do

Online Writing Center

If you are looking for help with your prose, Dr. Judith Hatchett recommends Purdue University’s online writing center at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/679/01/ . This site provides a wide range of advice for academic writing, including help with annotated bibliographies, grammar, proofreading, outlines, thesis statements, citing sources and a whole lot more. There’s even a section on how to combat writer’s block.

Another recommended site is http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/smhandbook6e/Player/index.aspx . Same topics.

Reference Pages and Works Cited Pages Made Easy

Did you know that the EBSCO databases will cite your sources for you? It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Go to print article.
  2. Look for drop down menu under “Citation Format.” Select APA or MLA.
  3. Print. The article will be cited near the top.

No Smoking in Front of the Library

Please do not smoke in front of the library. Smoke travels through the windows and book drops and into the lungs of our library staff. Please go around back for smoking. Thank you.

Full Text Articles from KY and U.S. Newspapers

“America’s Newspapers” is the electronic editions of local, regional, and national U.S. newspapers—all in one easy-to-search database. Each paper provides unique coverage of local and regional news, including companies, politics, sports, industries, cultural activities, and people in the community. Great for researching topics related to Kentucky. There is a link from the library’s homepage http://eagles.midway.edu/library .

Nursing Students

The library recently added several websites for nursing students to its webliography. Go to the library’s homepage and click on “subject guides” to view them. These sites are not intended as a substitute for library resources. Use them to supplement your research and to find practical information related to the field, such as the latest news and job opportunities.

Thanks to Carrie Lewis for helping select sites and Cindy Frazer for her recommendations.

Too much of a good thing

Music is a wonderful thing but not when it’s played in a library with other students and staff trying to study and work. Headphones are available at the circulation desk for those who want to play music on the computers. Please be respectful of people trying to study and work.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt Results

Ding, ding, ding, we have winners! Congratulations first place winner Christy Graves, second place winner Heather Owens, and third place winner Laura Ensley. Each winner received gift cards to Wal-Mart and a Halloween grab bag. The winners even knew that The Inside Cover is the library’s newsletter.  (We hope they didn’t have to look through their deleted files to find the answer to that question!)
