don't be frightened @ your library
Fall is here and as the leaves begin to change, the semester work begins to pile up. But don't be scared; the library is here to help exorcise those semester demons. If you are looking for information on a paper topic, researching a paper, using a database or just looking for a quiet place to read or study the library is the place to haunt.
Let Freedom Read The First Amendment protects your right to read whatever you wish, from the classics to the profane. However, did you know that books are constantly being challenged on the basis of their content? During Banned Books Week (September 24th-October 4th) you can learn all about which books are frequently trying to be censored and why. Check out the American Library Association's website for more information on the most popular books that are challenged and the reasons for those challenges.
Can't Find What You're Looking For? Try InterLibrary Loan Did you just find the perfect article on EBSCOhost, only to realize that the Library doesn't have it and it's not available in full text? Don't worry, all hope is not lost. You many still be able to get the article through InterLibrary Loan.
Midway College library has the ability to request an article or book from nearly every public or academic library in the country. Please be aware, however, that items requested through ILL may take up to TWO WEEKS to get. This means that you need to make sure that you start your research early enough to be able to request and receive items through ILL. The reference librarian has many magical information-gathering tricks up her sleeve, but making an article requested through ILL appear the next day is not one of them.
Also be aware that while ILL is usually free, libraries (especially those outside of Kentucky) may charge a fee. It is up to you to either pay the fee or request that the item be cancelled.
The InterLibrary Loan service is available for use by all Midway faculty, staff and students.
If you have any questions about Interlibrary Loan please feel free to contact Carrie Lewis at clewis@midway.edu or 846-5744.
Study Rooms The library has three rooms for that may be used on a first-come basis for individual or group study and for club or committee meetings. The room across from the elevator on the second floor has a large table that has seating for eight. The smaller room, also on the second floor, is by the 700's in the stacks and has seating for four. The Duke Conference Room on the first floor is also available, but it is advised to reserve it ahead of time since it is used rather often. There is an appointment book by the phone at the circulation desk in which you can register your name.
Research Tip of the Month When using Academic Search Premier to find articles try using the Smart Text feature located in the Search Modes Box under Search Options. Smart Text allows you to enter as much text as you want for your search, including a sentence, a phrase, a paragraph or even whole pages.
Research Tip of the Month II Having trouble formulating a research topic, finding information for a topic you already have or using any of the library databases? The Reference Librarian is here to help. She can help you develop a topic, help you plan a search strategy and show you how to use the library's resources.
