My alma mater was books, a good library.... I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.

-Malcolm X

The whole world opened to me when I learned to read.

-Mary McLeod Bethune

Any book that helps a child form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep continuing needs, is good for him.

-Maya Angelou

Books were my pass to personal freedom.  I learned to read at age three, and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi.

-Oprah Winfrey

 Celebrate

Black history @ your library

Celebrate Black History Month all month @ your library.  We will have a display set up focusing on the achievements of African American women.  Stop by and take a look--you just might learn something.

Library Welcomes Easier Access

 to Online Databases

Tired of keeping up with all those user IDs and passwords for access to the library's collection of online resources such as EBSCOhost?  Well, now you need only your Midway College network account information--the username and password that you use to access your e-mail.  Just click on the name of the individual database you want to use and you will be prompted for your college account information.  You will be able to switch back and forth between databases without re-entering passwords if you do not close out your browser.  We hope you find this new feature much more convenient.  Give it a try at http://eagles.midway.edu/library/dblist.htm.

ILL made easy

Found an article or book that would be perfect for the project you are working on?  Well never fear--Interlibrary Loan is here and now it's easier than ever.  Simply go to the library homepage, locate the Library and Information Resources heading, click on Interlibrary Loan, fill out the form and click submit.  (Or, you can simply save this direct link in your browser favorites http://eagles.midway.edu/library/ill.htm)  Your request will be directly delivered to a librarian who will do her best to fill it.  Remember ILL requests can take up to 2 weeks to fill.

Reference Area Computers

When using the computers in the library, please keep in mind that  the computers in the reference area (or lobby) are to be used only for library research; the computers in the computer lab are for your personal use.  Whenever you use your personal logon on the reference computers, you are disabling the desktop shortcuts that we have set for accessing library resources.   The library staff and your fellow classmates will truly appreciate it.

Group Study Rooms

The library now has three group study rooms for that you may use on a first-come basis.  The room across from the elevator on the second floor has a large table that has seating for eight.  The smaller room, also on the second floor, is by the 700's in the stacks and has seating for four.  The Duke Conference Room on the first floor is also available for group study.  It is advised, though, to reserve it ahead of time since it is used rather often.  There is an appointment book by the phone at the circulation desk in which you can register your name.

GoogleDocs

Can't remember where you put your jump drive or that ever elusive floppy disk?  Why not try creating your documents with GoogleDocs.  It's free and all you need is an e-mail address to get started.  With GoogleDocs you can create basic documents from scratch, share and collaborate on documents with people in real time, access and edit your documents from anywhere and even put your work on the web.

If you are interested in learning more, simply go to www.google.com, click the "more" drop-down menu and go to Documents.

A Leap Year Poem

Thirty days hath September

April, June and November

All the rest have thirty one

Save February she alone

Hath eight days and a score

Till leap year gives her one day more.
